會燦/ Hoe-chan
아주 최근, 거이 50여년 가까이에 이르러 카톡으로 再會한 班친구
이런저런 추억속에 가끔 생각은했지만
몇년전 주어진 연락처를 뒤척이며 통화意向 문자를 넣었다.
카톡의 恩惠로 버튼 하나만 누르면 세상어디 누구와도 연결되는 21세기, 이 공짜(?) gadget 을 마음껏 활용하고자…
學窓 時節 거이 친하지 않았던 사이였지만, 그는 좋은 성격에 누구와도 화창하게 웃으며 잘 어울렸고 더구나 운동을 잘해,

특히 축구시합이 있을때마다, 늘 반 대표 선두에서 뛰던 깊은 인상이 남아 있던터. 

뒤늗게 듣기로, 같은 훈련소에 나보다 2개월 먼저 거쳐나갔다는 시간과 上面못한 아쉬움의 공백도
허지만 너무 오랫만이라 나를 기억할까 아니면 갑자기 반갑지 않은 손님의 ‘여보세요’로 面駁을 당할까 疑懼心이 앞선다.
허나 이 짧은 인생, 새로운 향수가 정겹고 값진 친구가 귀한 황혼길에서 무엇을 더 주저하랴?
일단 통화를 시작하니 그 친구는 한편 놀라면서도 역시나 옛날의 그 환한 음성, 會燦이란 이름 그대로 밝음이 모여진,

包容있는 응답이다.
가까운 친구들일찌라도 쉽지않은 환영적인 반응. “야, 오랫만이다”. 먼저 회찬이를 기억속으로 이끌어내자
“야, 너는 나를 많이 기억하는데 나는 너에 대한 기억이 많이 없어서 미안하다”며 특히 한가지를 집는다.
“네가 엄청컸지, 우리는 너를 한참 올려다봤어”. 키얘기가 나오니 얼른 교실의 기억이 스친다.

“그래 네가 19번으로 앞쪽에 앉았지.
나는 반대로 맨 뒷자리에 앉았었구”. “그래 나 19번이었어” 하며 내가 기억해주는 그의 번호에 믿지못하겠다는 語調다.
아무튼 학교졸업후 같은 직업을 시작한 주위 모든 친구들이 다 中途 下車 했지만 그 자신만은 포기없이 계속적으로 한다는 친구.
그래 한우물을 파라는 옛말처럼 그것이 성공의 비결이라네. 자네라면 꼭 그렇게 성공하리라 믿어졌지.

아무튼 그 많은 시간과 空間臺가 지났어도 첫마디부터 야, 너와나를 부를수있기에, 그래서 고등학교때 친구들이 가장 가깝다는 말을 證明해주는가 보다.
아무튼 태어나 세상을 느끼기 시작하면서부터 초, 중, 고, 대학 그리고 사회의 모든 사람들이 가깝게 멀게 스쳐갔지만 아무튼,

오래 살다보니 늦자락에, 카톡을 통해 그다지 친하지도 않았던 반 친구 하나와 다시 인연이 닿게된것이 신기하기만 하다.

Nearly five decades or so on.
A reunion, via Kakao talk, with an old class mate who has lingered,
in my mind for donkey’s years.
It is the 21century when we can be connected with anyone worldwide,
by just touching one button.
A gadget, free of charge in zipping. Thought, why not, taking it for granted?
I gingerly sent him a message hoping to respond.

We weren’t that close at all.
What remained with me was his vivacious laughs and outgoing personality.
He was fit and athletic who represented our class in any,
sporting competitions, especially in football.

Later I learned that he had been in the same boot camp where I trained two months after him

for my national service.
I wasn’t certain if he could remember me at all or shut me down to first “hello”,
as an unrequested call from a person from the past.
But then, it would be worthwhile trying to rekindle an old classmate on the path of my late life.

“Hello”. “Hello, wow, it’s been a long time”, a bit surprised but in such a welcoming tone.
His upbeat sound hasn’t changed since the old school days and just like his name which means ‘a bright harmony’.  I brought out a few things about him who was then apologetic for not reciprocating in the same terms.

“But one thing, you were so all. I had to look you up so high”.
That envisaged our old class room. “Yes, you sat near the front as your class number

was 19 and I sat the opposite, farthest back end”.
He exclaimed, “oh, my gosh, my number, was 19 indeed”, in a puzzled voice.
He carried on that “some of us started working in the same field but,
I am the only one who has been working on the same job since leaving the school”.
I deeply sensed and believed that he would be the one who would stick to his guns all along.
Yes, that is the secret of success, isn’t it?

So many friends and acquaintances have passed by my life through time and space since,

I was aware of the world.
It seems to be vouching that true friends were from high school in one’s life.

When ones meet each other again, are connected instantly and all the formal barriers aren’t required. I’ve been feeling awesome since this reunion with Hoe-chan who wasn’t close but touched

my life again. Life is full of mysteries so, I hope it could develop to a solid friendship in our late lives.
