비애의 운명을 안고 태어나

울때도 그저 혼자 남겨저 울었지

어린시절, 하루는 이노래가 라디오를 타고 흘러나왔다.

그저 우리 형제들이 듣는 팝송의 하나였는데 부르는 가수가 누구인지도 관심없이 웬지 모르게 이노래가 마음을 파고 들었다

한글이었어도 이 노래 뜻을 모를텐데 영어니까 아예 그냥 멜로디를 듣는 정도였다. 그이후로 나는 늘상 이노래를 흥얼거리는 습관이 붙었고 나중에 여러 팝송들에 심취하게 될때 친구들이 물었다, 어느 팝송을 제일 좋아하느냐고, 나는주저없이 그동안 잊고있던 Wednesday's child라고 했다.

몇십년의 세월이 흘러 얼마전 동네 Pop/ Folk클럽에 가입했다. 각자가 좋아하는 여러 노래를 선택하던중 ‘Wednesday's child’를 부른 가수가 영국의Matt Monroe 였음을 알게되었다. 아울러 그렇게 귀에 익던 Walk away, The music played and Born free etc. 등등이 그의 노래였다. 클럽친구 하는말이 자기가 젊을때  Matt Monroe를 자주 보았는데 그가 유명한 가수 되기전에는 버스 차장이었고 자기가 다니던 바의 단골 손님이었다고 했다.

아무튼 다시한번 ‘Wednesday's child’를 접해보니 그렇게 가슴찡한 슬픈내용의 노래일줄이야. 옛부터 점쟁이들이 일주간에 탄생하는 아이들의 운명을 점쳤는데 그중 가장 비애의 운명을 타고나는 어린이들이 Wednesday's child 라는 것이다.

나는 그저 호기심에 평생 생각없이 모르고 있던 내생일의 요일을 찾아보았다. 기대감조차없이 찾아본 내생일이, 아뿔사, 수요일이었다. 그래서 그토록 그노래가 집요하게 느껴졌던 것일까? 물론 아주 우연의 일치일수도 있겠지만 이렇게 일치되는 사실에 묘한 감정이 인다.

내운명이 점쟁이들이 보았던 이노래의 가사와 같은것이었는지는 또다른 차원의 일이고.

One day, when I was little, this song came on our transistor that has hit me ever since. It was one of the pop songs we brothers enjoy to listen to and I didn’t pay any attention it who sung by. Even if it was in Korean, I wouldnt’ve known the meaning of it’s words, it’s lyrics in English was just an interesting rhythm to follow. Since then it became a habit of me humming this tunes. Later I really began to appreciate the pop songs, a friend of mine asked me which pop song I liked the most, I answered ‘Wednesday's child’ straightaway.

After the decades, not that long ago, I joined a local pop/folk group. Each members were asked to select favourite artists and submit their songs. I found ‘Wednesday's child’ and it’s artist Matt Monroe, as well as the records of Walk away, The music played and Born free etc. A friend from the club told me that Matt Monroe had been one of the regulars in his local pub. He also told me Matt Monroe had been a bus conductor before he rose to his stardom.

I had no idea how poignant this song was! Ancient fortune tellers saw, What luck/ fate one should have by the day of the week he/she was borne on.  Wednesday's child is a child of woe that is a tragedy.

It made me curious and I searched for the day of my own birthday without much thoughts. Voila! I was Wednesday's child. Was it sheer coincidence or what made me feel so close to this record for all these years? whatever the reason, I felt déjà vu.

Was my destiny meant to be like this song lyrics? It’s another dimensional question.
