Atheist Credo
==============

Wolran Kim
December 2012

The Supreme Court case Murray v. Curlett eliminated obligatory school prayer and mandatory Bible readings in public schools in 1963 as unconstitutional. The case had been brought by Madalyn Murray O’Hair, a self-proclaimed Atheist, in response to the required moment of prayer and Bible reading in her son’s school near Baltimore in 1961. Later in 1963, O’Hair founded American Atheists, which remains one of the most activist atheist groups in the U.S. today. Threats were made against her life for decades after the decision and the United States Congress reacted to the decision by drafting over 150 resolutions to overturn it by amending the Constitution. To date all those resolutions have failed. She and her family were kidnapped as part of a revenge plot and murdered in a grisly fashion by a former employee in August 1995.

Atheism is the exciting belief in the non-existence of a non-deity's existence. Atheist’s main belief is that there are absolutely no absolutes. The practice of Atheism is legal throughout most of the world, with the exceptions of China, North Korea, the Muslim countries, Singapore, and the United States of America. In another blatant attempt to suck up to the American government, Great Britain has expressed intentions to outlaw Atheism.

One of the youngest and least recorded religions, Atheism stands out for its lack of scriptures, rituals, prophets, and other sacred paraphernalia. The first prominent religious figure to address the Atheist Problem was Christian spokesman George W. Bush, who described Atheists as “a real threat in America, including to the rest of the world,” and attributed the danger of Atheism to the fact that “you can't really tell them apart from regular folk. They're so hidden, so undercover; you could say they're almost indivisible.”

Atheism is the philosophical position that there is no supernatural deity of the kind usually associated with monotheism. It is often associated with Agnosticism, the position that one cannot know one way or another whether a deity exists. Atheists and agnostics together make up 4% of the population, or approximately 1.2 million people. Atheists believe that only in knowledge of themselves and knowledge of their fellows can he find the understanding that will help lead to a life of fulfillment. The word, atheism was derived from Greek, ἄθεος (atheos), meaning absentmindedness or heartless, and shifted to mean of ‘no god.’

The rise of atheism was the greatest movement in Western history of religious philosophy. There was no concept of atheism before the Cartesian era (1596-1650) who founded analytic geometry and introduced Zero of India number. Math was closely related to a belief system and it took long years to think of no god with a concept of Zero. The concept of Zero was introduced in Europe in the 13th century, and used in earnest since the 17th century Cartesian era.

Atheism appeared periodically in Western culture. Plato demonstrated against atheism in Nomoi, but Democritus and Epicurus spoke in favor of atheism from the perspective of materialism. In the 19th century, atheism appeared with materialism of Karl Marx and was confronted with metaphysical spiritualism. Modern atheism is different from materialism in many views. French atheism was combined with British empiricism and Rene Descartes’s mechanistic cosmology in the 18th century. Niccolo Machiavelli has contributed to atheism in the field of politics by claiming the independence of politics from morality and religion in the 16th century.

Something that cannot be explained scientifically does not exist; God cannot be explained scientifically; therefore God does not exist. This inference is not right because the premise is wrong. There are many things that cannot be explained scientifically such as the mind, love, truth, the good, the beautiful, and faith. If we deny existence of these things, we cannot be angry or love because these things do not exist. Humans are born as theists. We will naturally find religious practices despite never having contact with a particular religion because we were born like that.

The system of communism fails 100% with the rule of human because it is made of theocratic situations such as Revelation or prophecies of the Old Testament from the Bible. Therefore it will succeed if God sit in the highest power. Communism fails because of human’s sin and evil. Evil is in human nature. There is religion wherever people live in all ages and countries. Human is the religious animal and has a religious mind just as he has physiological needs, appetites, and passion. This is human instinct. People naturally seek the help of God in urgent cases because God gave humans a trusted sense toward God.

The reason theism is accepted as a non-scientific theory is that it is a phenomenon that cannot be explained or predicted. It is also because the notion is contrary to current knowledge. The term science consists of explanations of phenomenon, prediction, pervasiveness, and the best description. However, all these realizations are possible only under human knowledge.

I think existence which humans can understand or be defined could not be God. Therefore atheism is not worth considering as religion because they cannot prove god does not exist. Religion is worth it only when it preserves areas that humans cannot understand with all human’s limitations. God literally is an omniscient existence who solves all human’s finiteness, limitations, mysteries, and contradictions. A controversy of the existence of God is just a boondoggle such as that compulsion to eat hate food to the other.

A question of science or non-science is different from a matter of the existence of God. Science is necessary to humans as knowledge whether they believe in God or not. Some religious people compare evolutionism and creationism, and then divide science and non-science to disparage science. An aversion to excessive actions and mistakes of existing religious members drive people to atheism more than anything else. Religion is often regarded as the factor that led to war and violence, but committing violence and war are just humans using religion.
