<손바닥>
<Palm Map>
Inja Kim
Silently, carefully, I gaze at my palm.
Mosaic shapes, lines and patterns lie in a map,
Within which my past times, my past lives breathe.
Amongst serene, calm streams and shallows,
I follow ever-changing, dancing shadows,
And listening to a brook's water, sounds of downstream trickling,
I face hills, dry, barren plains and fields.
With the beginning of my immigrant descent,
My true nature, my true color, camouflaged and protected,
I lose my way, I lose myself.
Slowly and delicately, my heart and my soul unwrinkles,
Yet even as I feel elation, I burst into tears,
And even as I feel melancholy, I burst into laughter,
Between the wrinkles of my palm.
Deep within a forest, lost and wandering, I hear my children call to me.
Sounds of clear, bright laughter from my children carries to a running brook,
And I am drawn to these familiar sources.
Past the barren plains of the map, there grows a fertile forest.
Following the current of this sparkling, laughing brook,
My heart also carries.
