A Trip Down Memory Lane
Cha SinJae
A worn out box discarded in the closet, I opened
Familiar faces, sickly yellowish glimpses of memory
Loomed filling the entire room.
A young man of 70 years ago, strode out
My father in law, with so well formed feature
Now a skinny bent body past way over 90s
Loosened feeble glances
A chilly wind felt gave me empty feeling.
My own mother who was so pretty like a peony
So happy looking at age 22, holding me, one year old.
Buried her green bamboo like husband died of appendicitis
Floated so far down for a few decades
A decayed eighty years old, no more to decay further
Left a sharp knife mark on my heart's bare skin.
Childish years and youth of my husband, me and my brothers
Flauting like green barleys, and in the midst
Autumn leaves fall furtively one after another
My husband and I in front of the officiator of our marriage
Stress hardened faces
So adorable.
Those faces without any trace of exhausting life
Three kids walked out one by one
Births, 100th days, birthdays, school admissions, graduations and marriages
From the first to the third
Those bustling days when even sunbeam looked dancing
I miss them, and am grateful
In a blinking moment,
We became grandpa and grandma
On my dried tingling knees
New green shoots, budded to my thrill
Gran-pa, Gran-ee..
Lips prettier than flowers flutter...
Not realizing it's already deep in the night
Groping still into my photo albums
I remained for long hours as a thirsty "Forget-Me-Not"

The days of our years are threescore years and ten;
and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years,
yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
