-1989년 베를린장벽의 무너짐을 보고-

우르릉 쾅쾅

느덦이 터진 한 진동의 소리

지난 반세기동안 쌓이고 쌓여

영원한 빙하기로 잔유할것 같았던

고요의 장벽이 한꺼번에 녹아 무너져 내린다

 아, 빛나는 새시대를 불러올 평화의 예고인가?

 

순식간에 공간을뚫고 돌진한 굉음의 답변

누군가 그토록 말해주길 바랬던

그 꿈이 눈앞에 현실로 나타나

피에젖은 저 붉은벽을

한겹, 두겹, 수십겹으로 벗겨내린다

수세기의 철의 장막이 거두어진다

 

이렇듯 만인이 기쁨으로 하나되어

새로운 내일을 복창하건만

저멀리 극동녘의 한곳에선

이 역사적 굉음이 들리는지 마는지

유령의 침묵이 무겁게 내리깔진채

온세상의 바램에 아랑곳없다

 

오 자유의 북소리여

언제나 그곳에도 메아리쳐 울릴것인가?

통곡속에 정지된 저 마지막 凍土를 향하여

이미 벌써 시작되었어야 했건만

왜 아직도 그토록 지체해야만 하는가?

더이상 늦출수없다

                                                           

바로 이 새벽에

Here, a streak of sound

Rumbling, all of a heap

‘Tis breaking down a long

stillness – a half century

To bring a new era with a light

‘Tis a sound of harmony in peace,

Thawing, the ice-age seemed untouchable.

 

A yearning to hear it,

Someone would tell,

All of a sudden,

An answer with a trembling

Through the air.

The dream’s come true dispersing all,

The long and tedious bloodstained wall coming down

Onefold,

Twofold

Manifold,

Everywhere

 

All bursting a joy in one

For tomorrow the new world

 

Yet, there in the East

To be heard of not

Haunting the ghastly silence

Taking no account of prayer

From all over the world

 

Oh! The drumbeat of freedom!

Raise up the last spur

Cry and shatter on the last wall frozen

Thus constant wailing

 

When will the echo back rejoicing to the free world?

Should it be at the beginning of time,

Alas! make it soon, no more  

Thus dawn.
