담벼락에 패션푸룻(Passion Fruit) 넝쿨을 올린 것은 잘한 일이다. 그 전에는 담쟁이 넝쿨이 있었던 자리다. 단감 대추 레몬 아바카도 등 이십 여종이 되는 과목들의 배경과 잘 어울린다. 옛 고향집 분위기로 집 주변을 가꾸려다보니 그렇게 되었다. 앞뜰은 관상수 위주로, 뒤뜰은 과목위주가 된 것이다. 담쟁이 넝쿨은 낙엽을 지우기 때문에 겨울철 담장은 민둥산처럼 을씨년스러웠었다. 그러나 패션푸룻은 상록 줄기식물인 것이 더없이 고맙다.

패션푸룻의 꽃은 참 희한하다. 줄기와 잎사귀는 꼭 야생 하늘수박 같다. 그러나 꽃은 낮에만 피고 밤에는 오므린다. 정교하기 이를 데 없다. 속은 희나 두툼한 연녹색 꽃받침 다섯 장에다 얇은 흰색 다섯 장을 곁들인 것은 꽃의 내구력을 위한 디자인이리라. 그 위엔 가느다란 국수면발을 가지런히 모아놓은 것 같은 보라색 레이스. 그리고 당그래 모양의 노란 다섯 수술에다 또 제일 위층에는 연록의 셋 암술, 사층 꽃의 조화가 정말 기막히다.

열매도 일품이다. 전에는 패션푸룻 쥬스를 자주 샀었다. 향료보다는 진액에 길들여졌는데 뭐하려 다시 사겠는가. 열매를 많이 보려면 한 겨울에 근간줄기 위를 바싹 손질해주고 그 다음 새순들은 자르지 말아야 한다. 열매는 댓살 아이 주먹만하지만 익을수록 초코렛색이 되고 스스로 꼭지를 물려 낙과를 자초한다. 낙과는 통조림 공정을 거친 거와 같기에 잘 간수했다가 반 갈라서 끓인 물에 타 씨 채로 음미해야 맛과 멋의 진수가 느껴질 것이다.

한 줄기 식물을 보고도 적재적소란 말을 다시 한 번 떠올린다. 패션푸룻 한 그루만 심으면 웬만한 집 담장은 삼년이면 다 뒤덮어질게다. 그것의 효용가치를 따진다면 일석이조 아니 그 이상이다. 패션푸룻은 염치없이 땅과 공간을 많이 차지하려 들지 않는다. 다른 초목들이 거들떠보지 않는 담장을 푸름으로 채운다. 게다가 꽃과 열매까지 얹어주니 이보다 더한 적임이 있겠는가. 패션푸릇처럼 분수를 알고, 빈곳을 채우는 사람이 될 수는 없을까.

It was the right decision to place passion fruit on my fence.

That was where the ivy was before.

It fits in well with over twenty other kinds of fruits there,
sweet persimmons, dates, lemons, avocados and other fruit trees.

I intend to turn my home’s surroundings into something like my old hometown.

I decorated the front yard by placing ornamental trees,
and placed shrubs and fruit trees in the back yard.

I now enjoy my view of the evergreen passion fruit on the fence.

The ivy that was on my fence before looked naked in winter season.

When its leaves had fallen off it looked like a mountain
without trees.

The flower of passion fruit is really strange.

The stems and leaves look just like wild sky watermelon.

It only blooms in day time, withdrawing at night.

It is very delicate.

Its design consists of inner white fillings on five thin green floral cups.

A purple lace that looks like well arranged noodle sticks lies on top.

Five round and yellow stamens with three thin and green pistils on the
very top makes for a well balanced flower.

How about its fruit?

I used to buy its juice quite often.

I was used to its juice rather than the fragrance but I need not
buy it any more.

If you want to get more fruit, you need to trim the main stem.

I trim the upper portion before winter time and leave
the new stems.

The fruit grows to about fist size and turns a chocolate color before falling onto the ground.
Fallen fruit can be canned. After storing, we cut them in half and boil them for good taste.

I recall the phrase, ‘a proper thing in its proper place’, as it relates to the stem
of the plant.

If we plant only one passion fruit stem, we might cover the
entire fence of a home in three years, killing two birds with one stone.

Passion fruit does not try to take over areas in an unmannered way.

It’ll cover the entire fence with green, a place that other plants
and trees ignore.

In addition to that, it gives us flowers and fruits. What else can
bring us more and do as well a job?

Can we become a person just like passion fruit that knows his
place and fills the empty spot?
