{수필} 밤낮의 꽃 5각선인장

갓 태어난 고슴도치 새끼도 이럴 듯 신기하고 예쁠까. 그 선인장의 이름을 나는 아직 알지 못한다. 늦은 봄날, 억세게 세어버린 버들강아지처럼 듬성한 가시를 달고 있는 것이 특징이다. 내 나름대로 붙인 그 이름은 꽃 모양에서 유래됐다. 봉우리 때 펜타콘처럼 정5각형이더니 꽃도 꼭 무슨 무공훈장 같은 상상을 불러일으킨다. 한가운데 별 모양의 불가사리를 오려붙인 듯, 위장복의 얼룩점 무늬를 닮은 정교한 꽃잎 다섯 장도 5각 형태이다.

그 선인장의 유전인자는 어찌 되어있기에 그 생김새에 그처럼 희한한 꽃을 피워냈는지 믿기지 않는다. 대체로 선인장은 웬만큼 오래되어야 꽃을 피운다. 꽃은 아름답기는 한데 거의 하루 이틀이면 수명을 다한다. 그러나 그 꽃은 여늬 선인장과 달랐다. 수수하고 무뚝뚝해 보이는 사내의 전형이라고나 할까. 밤낮 엿새 동안 담담하게 피어 있다가 그야말로 ‘떠날 때는 말없이’ 바닥에 고개를 푹 떨어뜨렸다.

이름도 모르는 그 선인장 꽃이 눈에 밟힌다. 식물이나 사람을 보는 눈은 비슷해서 그럴 게다. 사람의 선입견은 좀처럼 바뀌지 않는다. 내 첫인상이 그랬고 말수가 적어 닦아서기가 어렵더라는 말을 종종 들었다. 무엇 하나 내세울 것이 별로인 터수에 주변머리도 없어 그랬을 게다. 그러나 꼭 덧붙는 말 한 마디. 알고 보니 영 딴판이더라고-. 글쎄다. 듣기 따라 전제된 어감이 좀 이상하니 어찌 받아 드려야 할지. 나는 그것도 잘 알지 못한다.

현대는 튀는 패션의 시대다. 예쁘다는 말은 화려하다거나 아름답다는 표현에는 한 참 못 미치는 말이다. 그 선인장 꽃을 말하자면 유행 감각보다는 약간 촌스러운 데가 있는 고전미를 말해야 할지 모르겠다. 그러나 그 마음속에는 아무렇게나 시류에 휩싸이지 않는 바람벽이 있지 싶다. 너나없이 변덕부림을 시대적응이라고 당연시하고 있지 않는가. 케케묵은 생각이라고 등한시당해도 할 수없다. 그 선인장처럼 고전적인 것은 언제나 시대를 초월, 앞만 보고 나갔으니까 말이다.

Can a new born hedgehog be as cute and wonderful as this?
I still do not know the name of the cactus.
Thorns appear sparsely along her body like a well grown catkin.
It’s shaped like a pentagon while budding but changes shape, attaining military service like honor for the flower.
I named it for that reason.
It looks like someone pasted a starfish onto the cactus along with
five pentagon-shaped petals.
It really looks like a military officer’s uniform.
It’s unbelievable how and from what genes caused the flower
to show such a unique shape.
In general, cacti bloom after long days.
It usually only shows its beauty for a few days.
This cactus was different from other cacti.
It flowered for six days and nights before they hurry
away, gone without words.
I can see it vividly now.
Perhaps people see plants and other people in similar way.
The prejudice of people does not change easily.
I have often heard that I am not an easy person to talk to.
Perhaps they said so because I am a man of few words, and their impression of me reflected such.
I act as if I have nothing to brag about.
Furthermore, I do not have a silver tongue.
People tell me I am different from their first impression.
I do not know how I should react to their feelings.
We are living in this rapidly changing age of fashion.
The word ‘pretty’ is far less meaningful than ‘splendor’ or ‘beautiful'.
The catctus’ flower might not be as ‘pretty’ as other popular flowers, but it bears the beauty of classics.
> Perhaps the cactus has an inner wall that resists against the temptation of popularity.
Aren’t we always practicing caprice as the proper way to live?
We cannot abandon classical way of belief as an old idea.
Classical ideas always went ahead far beyond the age by pushing onward keeping their eyes fixed and straight.
