까치 소식

아침에 창을 열었더니
야자나무 위에
까치 두 마리 앉아있다

깍깍거릴 때 마다
산냄새 흙냄새
갖가지 풀꽃 냄새
마구 쏟아져 들어 온다

파도소리 매미소리
생미역 깻잎 옥수수 냄새까지
흠뻑 젖어있는 걸 보니
어머니가 보내신 게 분명하다

옥수수 생미역 유난히 좋아하던 나
팔십이 넘으셔도 잊지 않으시고
먼 길 떠나는 까치 날개에
고향을 얹어 보내셨나보다

내 걱정일랑 마라시며
손사래 치시던 아픈 미소도
까치 등에 업혀왔다.

Magpie Tidings
              Cha SinJae

When I opened the window in the morn
Upon a palm tree
Two magpies sit there

Wock ,wock, wock-a wock, as they sing
Mountain air, earthy smell
All sorts of plant flower smell
Gush out, pour in.

Sounds of waves, and cicadas
Even smell of raw seaweed, sesame leaves  and even corns
All there soaked wet
No doubt mom must have sent them

Even at the age of 80s, not forgetting me
Who love especially corn, raw seaweed
Upon wings of  those magpies embarking a long journey
Mom must have laid my hometown as well.

Even the sad smile she wore waving her hands
Saying don't worry about me at all
Was brought upon the backs of magpies.

The magpie singing [or  crying to Korean minds] means a happy heralding of a  welcome guest who must be coming on that day.
