아무리 뛰어난 예술가라도 소용없다네
다만 대리석이 제 몸을 드러내어야 하지

대리석이 일러주는데로 그마음을 읽고
조각가는 손을 놀려서 빚어낼 따름이라네

잉크와 펜이 다를 게 없지만
잘된 시도 나오고 모자란 시도 나오네
그저 그런 시도 있다네

다만 대리석에
고귀하고 천박한 형태가 있다면
그건 순전히 망치를 든 사람 탓일세

나의 영혼이 신을 닮았다면
바깥의 아름다움을 탐닉하지 않았을 것을

이제 덧없는 가치에는 더 이상 눈돌리지 않으리
영원한 형태가 나에게 이리오라 손짓하네
