- 줄거리 -

오페라의 유령은 천사의 목소리를 타고났지만
선천적인 기형 때문에

가면을 쓰고 오페라극장 지하에서 살아야 했던
남자 주인공의 비극적인 사랑 이야기이다.
이 소설은 서양 문화권의 이야기

'미녀와 야수''노트르담의 곱추'
류의 섬뜩하면서도 애절한 로맨틱 미스테리로,
치밀하게 구성된 추리 소설의 긴박감을
전한다.

소설의 무대는 파리의 오페라 극장이다.
이 극장에서 이상한 사건들이
일어나면서 유령이
나온다는 소문이 퍼진다.
끝에 가서 밝혀지지만,
유령의 정체는 흉한 얼굴을 가면으로 가리고
미로 같은 오페라 극장

지하의 비밀장소에 홀로 숨어 살고 있는 사나이다.

이 사내는 극장 전속 여가수인
아름답고 순수한 크리스틴을 짝사랑하여
무대 공연중인 그녀를 감쪽같이

지하의 호수 한가운데로 납치한다.
그러나 어릴 때부터 그녀를 사랑했던
샤니 드 라울 자작은 목숨을 걸고
지옥의
끝까지라도 크리스틴을 따라간다.

오페라의 유령은 결국 못 이룰
사랑임을 알고 쓸쓸히 사라진다.
하지만 뮤지컬에서는 무대
공연에 맞추기 위하여
이야기의 많은 부분을
변형시켰고 등장인물들을 축소시켰다.
일면 극적 효과를 위한 것이기는 하지만

소설의 치밀한 구성이 적잖이 훼손될 수밖에 없었다.

지은이 소개

가스통 르루(Gaston Leroux) -당대
최고의 프랑스 추리소설 작가였던

가스통 르루(Gaston Leroux, 1868∼1927)는
「오페라의 유령」으로 널리 알려졌으며,
이 작품은 나중에
영화와 연극으로
다양하게 각색되어 더욱 유명해졌다.

가스통 르루는 학교를 졸업한 뒤,
법률사무소에서 서기로 일하면서 한가한
시간에 수필과
단편소설을 쓰기 시작했다.
1890년경에는 전업 저널리스트가
되었고, 1894∼1906년에 걸쳐 특파원으로
세계 각지를
돌아다녔으며, 1905년의
러시아 혁명을 비롯하여 자신이 직접 체험한
다양한 사건과 모험을 파리에 보고했다.

기자로서 르루는 사실적인 묘사보다
대중의 감성을 자극하거나 감상적인
평을 많이 가미해 많은 고정
독자를 확보하였다.

1900년대초에 장편소설을 쓰기 시작했는데,
처음으로 성공을 거둔 작품은 아마추어
탐정인
조제프 룰르타비유가 주인공으로 등장하는
노란 방의 수수께끼 Le Myst re de la chambre
jaune」
(1907)였다. 작가로서 그는 특유의 기사체 문장을
사용하여 마치 직접 사건 속으로 뛰어들어가
문제를 해결하는
듯한 치밀한 구성의
소설을 많이 발표했다.
