오월의 눈이 차창에 날린다
끝없는, 저 순백의 수화는
아무래도 누군가가 보내는 메시지 인 것만 같아
문득 창문을 메우며, 하늘을 채우며
내게로 들어서는 산, 록키
몸의 모든 이음새를 없애며 절박한 포옹에 숨이 멎을 때
산인지 하늘인지 알 수 없는 곳
수천 수만의 흰나비들
억겁을 날아다니는 날개짓 속에
내가 있다
다시 보면, 산의 높이만큼 계곡은 깊다
서로 바라보는 아득한 거리
그러나 낙하하던 아품의 기억도
오르려는 숨가쁜 좌절도 지우며
흰 날개짓 소리, 천상의 노래 들린다
예사롭지 않던 저녁 바람결에 들려오던 그 음절
여기 록키에 와서 깨닫는다
그가 일 만년 전부터 나를 부르고 있었음을…

― on the Canadian Rockies

May’s snow flies across the car window;
The pure white sign language, endless,
Must be a message transmitted by someone.
The mountain suddenly enters into me
Filling the window, filling the sky;
The Rockies,
Deleting all the seams of the body, and halting breaths
With a desperate embrace.
Where one cannot distinguish hill from sky,
Millions of white butterflies.
I exist in their flapping wings
Flying across eons.
When I look again, the valley is as deep as the hill’s height.
In vast space where they look at each other
The sounds of white flapping wings
And heavenly songs are heard,
Deleting the memories of falling pain,
And the breath-taking frustrations in the upward climb.
I perceive here on the Rockies
The timbre of the sound I heard in the wind
On an unusual evening.
He has been calling me since millennia ago.
