어머니의 장독대

일상에 지치거나
잠 안 오는 밤이면
가끔
별을 따라 여행을 떠납니다

온갖 삶들이 무성한 숲을 지나고
온갖 욕망으로 얼룩진 도시를 지나다 보면
어느사이 나는
별속에 또 하나의 별이 되어
여기저기 기웃거리며 세상구경을 합니다

태평양을 건너
그리운 고향집에 이르는 날이면
지나간 시간들이
가슴을 헤치고 들어옵니다

크고 작은 기억의 뜰을 돌아
뒷마당에 이르면
이제는 쓸쓸한 장독대
몇개 남지 않은 항아리위에
정한수 한사발 놓여 있지요

그 정갈한 사발속엔
올망졸망한 어머니의 새끼들이
작은 별 마을을 이루고 있습니다
어머니는 밤마다
별 하나 하나를
반짝 반짝 닦아 가슴에 품으셨지요

이렇게 삼백 예순날
기도로 닦으시면서
행여나 비에 젖을까
바람에 날려갈까
온몸으로 껴안고 잠드신
어머니의 적막한 침실로 들어갑니다

마른 넝쿨 같이 가벼워진 몸
마른 꽃잎처럼 바스라질 것 같은 젖가슴
밤새 더듬다가 돌아오는 날은
이슬에 젖은 몸과 마음
온 종일
신열이 오르고 아픕니다.

When I am tired of daily chores
Or night sleep escapes me
Often
I embark on a trip after a star

After passing the thick forest of all sorts of lives
And mountains and seas smeared of all sorts of desires
Before I realize
I become one of the stars
Snooping here and there, sightseeing  the world

After crossing the pacific ocean
Finally reaching at my home in my hometown
Those hours of the past
Wedge into my heart

Walking around the yard with big and small memories
When I reach our backyard
There on the lonely JangDok platform
Upon one of a few jars barely survived
I see a bowl of lustral water  

In that clean bowl
Mother's little kids are in clusters
Forming a little town of stars
Every night, mother
Each star in her bosom
Polishing them till they shine, embraced one after another

Thus in every 365 days
Shining them with her prayers
Lest they get wet
Or blown away by the wind
Embracing them with all her body before falling asleep
There to her dreary bedroom, I go in.

Her light body dried like a vine
Her dry breasts parched like dry flower leaf
Groping them whole night long, till returning home
My heart and body wet by the dew
All day long
Suffer pains as fever rises
