Mother's Spike
Cha SinJae
A picture frame can't be hung properly
With my poor nailing skill.
Yet accompanying my husband to the States
On mother's heart,
a large spike
I pegged down so well and firmly.
On windy days or rainy days
Even on those days when the sun shone so brightly
The spike spot remained wet all the time
For a few decades
Hanging layer upon layer the longings on that spike
The weight piercing even to the bones
Body bent to white
Now
On the hill near the sun rising beach
Mom must take out those wet hours to dry
You did never never
Peg any such thing
As a spike on my heart
Neither let any
Such as blood to shed, no, no, no...
Mom used to wave her hands.

"Can a woman forget her sucking child,
that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?
yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands;
thy walls are continually before me.
