내 사랑하던 자여

말 좀 하이소 왜 말이 없소

 

가슴을 파고더는 통한 속에 한 마리 뻐꾹새가 되어

봄이 맞도록 목청 돋우어 뻐꾹뻐꾹 울어도

대답없는 이여

 

가시나무새처럼

피를 다 토하고 죽어야 하겠나이까

 

봄이 가고 여름이 가고 가을이 오고

겨울이 와도 그대 향한 새록새록 솟아나는

그리움

타오르는 노을처럼 가슴이 붉게 붉게

멍이 듭니다

 

피다 만 꽃봉오리

활짝 피어보지도 못한채

어이 그리 서둘러 가셨소

 

선혈의 피를 토하고 죽고 죽어 간

그곳 계곡에 연기처럼 산화하셨소

 

그대 혼이 아직 살아있어 나를 지키는 가요

바람이 불어 나를 관 속에 누이고 백골이 되면

그대 환영이 찾아 올까요.

 

*나의 첫사랑은 군에 입대하여 일선지구 근무 중 지뢰를 밟아 비명횡사했다.

군에 입대하기 전 만나주지 못한 회한이 사무친다. 오 그대여 평안히 잠잘지어다.

결혼하기 전 생각을 적어 보았다. 지금은 한 낱 전설이 되고 말았다.

I was in love with you.

Please, say something!

Why are you so mute?

 

I dwell upon your memory,

Painful grief and regret consume me.

 

Even though I sing like a cuckoo in spring,

With all my voice, loud and clear,

You remain silent, unresponsive,

A voiceless specter nearby.

 

Like the thorn bird's mournful song,

Shall I die, my lifeblood drawn?

 

From season to season, throughout the year,

My love for you never fades, always nearby.

 

My longing for you renews each day,

My heart, like twilight, in shades of red, does sway.

 

Why did you hasten to bid goodbye?

You were too young, your time gone awry,

Like a flower that withered before its prime,

Leaving me with tears, like a bell's mournful chime.

 

In the valley where scarlet blood was shed,

During the Korean War in '50, too many lay dead.

 

Among the heroes who bravely did fall,

You, too, became a flower on that wall.

 

Does your spirit linger, watching over me?

When wild gusts blow, and I lay down to sleep,

In my coffin, with white bones as my keep,

Will you, a phantom, my dreams decree?

 *My love enlisted in the Korean Army as soon as he graduated from University,

He served an infantry regiment in the 38 parallel in south Korea. In his service, 

he had stricken a mine in the field and he perished right away. I regret I didn’t 

say anything when he left hometown. My heart aches for him.
