고래들이 알래스카로 이동을 시작하는 삼월
캘리포니아 북쪽 해변
나무뿌리 큰 둥치가 검은 모래사장에서
물개 모양으로 등걸 잠을 자고 있다
여기까지 오는 동안 큰 고래들과 어깨를 비비며
새끼 고래는 살짝 업어도 보았을 것이다
조금 전 이 모래 사장에 닿았는지
젖은 몸이 검게 윤기 흐른다
몸통을 세워보니 물개가 하늘로 오를 듯
돌려보니 다시 물 속으로 자맥질
세워도 뉘어도 중심이 잡힌다
보이지 않는 중심이 여러 개의 팔을 가졌다
여기 좀 잘라 줘요, 여기 좀 깍아 줘요
파도치며 부딪치며 깍이고 닳아서
저를 완성시킨 나무 둥치
앉아도 서도 중심 못 잡고 모래밭 걷는 사람
나무 등걸에 업혀 고래 따라 간다면
There's more than one balancing point

In March, in the ocean off northern California
whales begin their migration to Alaska.
A large piece of driftwood lies sleeping
like a seal in a dark sandbar.
On it's journey here.
This fellow probably rubbed against many big whales
and carried baby whales on it's back briefly as well.
As though it arrived on the beach moment earlier
Its dark body is still wet and shiny.
Stand it on one end:
a seal is leaping toward the sky
turn it upside-down:
it is ready to drive into the ocean.
Standing up or lying down, it finds its central point.
The invisible central point has many arms.
"Trim here please,"
"Please crop over there too."
Crashing into waves to be carved and smoothed
the work is thus completed.
Someone walking on the beach
dose not find her balancing point, neither standing nor sitting.
But what if, she followed whales that had been carried
on the driftwood's back?
