폼페이의 멸망

베스비우스 화산이 뱀처럼

입을 벌려 불을 토하며 날룸거린다

누구를 삼켜먹을까 하고

 

폼페이 시장을 비롯 위정자들은

권력을 남용 악어처럼 위엄을 토하며

으르렁 거린다

 

꽃뱀에 물려 죽어가면서도

원형극장에서 피흘리면서 죽어가는

무사들의 피의 잔치에 환호성 높이는

양심에 먹칠한 사람 아닌 짐승들

 

하늘은 피의 비를 뿌린다

땅은 갈라지고 유황불이 솟구친다

드디어 활화산이 터진다

 

인육의 잔치가 벌어진다

아 시원하다! 모조리 몰살 됐다고

저승 사자가 한바탕 굿판을 벌인다

 

 아 그런데 

이 불가마 속에서 내가 살아 났다니!

저승사자가 놀라 혼비백산 도망을 치다니

 

모두 석고상처럼 화산재로 옷을 입은 사람 사람들

나는 신나게 그들을 그려댔다.

 

Downfall of Pompeii

Active volcano, Vesuvius gnarls

Throwing up burning flames like snake

Threatening to devour who is who.

 

Mayor of Pompeii, politicians and bureaucrats

Howl like lions misusing their power

Exceeding their authorities.

 

They are conscienceless smeared with ink

And beasts beyond animals.

Becoming victims bitten by flowery serpent

Cheering gladiators bleeding

On the brim of death in arena.

 

The sky is pouring out bloody rain.

The earth parts and fire and brimstone gush up.

The active volcano erupted with flames of magma.

 

All flesh was massacred at a blow.

Banquet was held with human flesh

Messenger from the world beyond

Danced and performed a round of exorcism.

 

What a surprise it is!

I am spared from fiery furnace and alive!

The messenger fled in awe and out of senses.

 

People, people clad in volcanic ashes

Looking like plaster figures.

I am drawing pictures of them in canvas

Thrilling me a great deal.
