Looking at the Picture of My Childhood Home

Son returned home after his visit to my childhood town in Korea
Showed me a picture of the old home where I was born

Wow, this is the home where my life was created
My dreams grew with me here
Oh, how I wanted to see you even in picture

You gave life to six of my sisters and brothers
Though the choga-roof transformed into a red tin roof
The wind still whispers to the bamboos in the backyard,
fresh and green
With white sandy beach spreading before the eyes
The sea hugs the house with its waves
The rising sun over the East Sea beckons me to my childhood

Life ran fast and scored a half century, left from childhood town
Today the picture quietly leads me to dream dreams of coming back
Someday, when the journey of immigration is over I dream coming home
To the home where I dreamed dreams
Again, I will lie down on front floor, and embrace the blue sky
and the waves of the East Sea

고향집 사진
-생가를 생각하며

고국을 방문한 아들녀석이
내 살던 옛집을 사진기에 담아 왔다
꿈에도 아슴푸레 잊지 못하여
그림으로나마 한 번쯤 보고 싶다는
아비의 부탁때문이었다

우리동기 육 남매 나서 자란 집
박넝쿨 가득했던 초가지붕은
그 새 빨간 양철지붕으로 모자를 썼으나
바람소리 청량하던 뒷뜰 대나무 숲은
아직도 실하고 푸르러 보인다

방 문 열고 툇마루에 나서면
눈앞에 펼쳐지는 하이얀 모래밭 너머로
파아란 바다가 온통 출렁이는 집
눈만 뜨면 가슴 설레도록 다가오는
동해의 일출 황홀하게 바라보며
꿈 많은 소년으로
십 년 가까이 이 집에서 살았다

세월은 빨리도 흘러서 벌써 반 백년
그 세월에 눌려
오늘도 고향집 사진 바라보며
나는 조용히 은퇴 후를 생각한다
언제쯤일까 아직 알 수는 없지만
이민생활 정리하고 나 고향으로 돌아가면
내가 태어나 꿈꾸며 자랐던 집
그 툇마루에 드러누워 다시금 푸른하늘과
출렁이는 바다를 가슴 가득히 안게 될 것이다
